Foreign delegates pitch for government support for Ayurved

The foreign delegates attending the 10th World Ayurved Congress (WAC) have called for more government-to-government efforts to secure wider recognition of Ayurved as a complementary or alternative system of medicine. They also appreciated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his global advocacy of Ayurved. About 300 delegates from different countries participated in the WAC International Delegates Assembly (IDA) at Parade Ground on Friday.
The IDA was inaugurated by the Ayush secretary, government of India, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the Ayush ministry is committed to promote Ayurved around the globe. He said that WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre (GTMC) was set up at Jamnagar in Gujarat in 2022 with a $250-million investment to raise the global profile of traditional medicine systems. Kotecha urged Ayurved stakeholders worldwide to work with GTMC and the Ayush ministry to address issues and concerns.
Dileep Ghosh from NICM health research institute, western Sydney University, Dileep Ghosh said that Ayurved represents a $ 6.2 billion business in Australia, a country with a population of just 19 million.
The president of the world movement for Yoga and Ayurved Jose Rugue said that in Brazil, there are 4,000 practitioners of Ayurved with the law treating them as therapists. He said that there are three Ayurved centres in Rio de Janeiro, conducting limited research. He said that given the demand there is potential for more such centres.
Delegates from Nepal and Sri Lanka sounded happy with the growth of Ayurved in their countries.
The head of Ayurved and alternative medicine at Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population, Pushpa Raj Poudel said that the Himalayan nation was home to South Asia’s oldest pharmacy dating back three centuries.
Delegates from Australia, South Korea, Singapore, Portugal, Poland, Argentina and Brazil highlighted the growing demand for Ayurved in their countries where it can only be offered as a lifestyle or wellness system.
Fire scare at the 10th World Ayurved Congress
DEHRADUN : Commotion occured in a portion of the arena of the 10th World Ayurved Congress being organised at the Parade Ground here on Friday when a fire broke out in a food stall. No one was injured in the incident. As per the eyewitnesses, the fire occurred due to leakage in the cooking gas cylinder in the kitchen at the venue. The fire was quickly brought under control by the security personnel and other workers deployed there. They used fire extinguishers to douse the fire.
