92 booked in Dehradun for drinking in public in two-day police drive

Dehradun police have booked 92 people over the past two nights for consuming liquor in public spaces, intensifying their ongoing campaign against public drinking and hooliganism.

The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the police teams carried out late-night checks in Premnagar market, Nanda Ki Chowki, Suddhowala, Jhajhra, Bidholi, Paundha and parts of Raipur on Wednesday night. A total of 47 people were caught drinking openly on roadsides and inside parked vehicles. They were brought to the police station in official vehicles, fined under the Police Act and warned against repeating the offence. The police also imposed a fine of Rs 11,750.

The police also seized three vehicles. The police team carried out a similar drive on Thursday in Premnagar and Raipur areas, including Maldevta Road, Thano Road and Maharana Pratap Sports College Road. Police detained 45 people, who were booked under the Police Act and fined a total of Rs 11,250. Two vehicles were seized during the operation. Singh said that strict action will be taken against those found drinking in public places or driving under the influence.

The police teams are also extra vigilant near big colleges and universities after multiple cases of disruption in law and order were observed in recent days. The respective police station in-charges are also in touch with the colleges and universities to ensure safety, law and order in these areas, especially at night, he added.
