Vijay Diwas: 1971 War martyrs remembered

Vijay Diwas was celebrated across Udham Singh Nagar district on Tuesday in the memory of the martyrs who laid down lives in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war.
The main event was held at the Martyrs’ Memorial site located in the district headquarters police line. During the 1971 Indo-Pak War, nine brave jawans hailing from the district sacrificed their lives while two others were injured.

The mayor Vikas Sharma, senior superintendent of police Manikant Mishra, chief development officer Divesh Shashani, SP City Niharika Tomar, district Sports officer Janaki Karki, District Sainik Welfare officer Colonel CP Kothari along with officers/employees from various departments and ex-servicemen paid tribute to the martyrs: Ram Dutt, Umesh Singh, Tika Ram, Diwani Nath, Hira Chand, Aan Singh, Joga Singh, Har Singh, and Trilok Singh, by laying wreaths and offering flowers. The Injured jawans as well as war veterans Captain Dhan Singh, Khadak Singh Karki, and Jai Singh were felicitated on the occasion.

The mayor said that Uttarakhand is the land of valour, patriotism and sacrifice.   “India was victorious in the 1971 war with martyrdom of many soldiers. We must hold them in grateful remembrance and this is the significance of Vijay Diwas celebration,” he said.  

On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, painting, essay and speech competitions related to 1971 Indo-Pak war/patriotism were organised by educational institutions in the district. Besides, the Sports department organised boys and girls open cross country race at the sports stadium.  All the winners were later awarded.
