Light rain and snowfall bring relief from rising temperatures across State

After days of above normal temperatures resulting in hot days, light rain in the plains and lower altitudes along with light snowfall in the higher reaches brought relief from the rising heat with the temperatures dropping by a few notches on Sunday.

Similar weather is expected on Monday with the State Meteorological Centre issuing an orange alert (be prepared to take action) regarding the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning/hail/squall (wind speed up to 50-60 kmph) likely to occur at isolated places in Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital and Champawat districts. The centre has also issued a yellow warning (be aware) regarding the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning/gusty winds (wind speed up to 40-50 kmph) likely to occur at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts. Further, intense spells of rain are likely to occur at isolated places in the State’s mountainous regions today. Apart from this, the maximum temperatures are likely to rise by two to three degrees Celsius during the next two-three days in the State.

The provisional State capital Dehradun is forecast to witness a partly to generally cloudy sky. Light to moderate rain/thunderstorm accompanied by lightning/hail/gusty wind (40-50 kmph) is likely to occur in some areas. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be about 29 degrees Celsius and 14 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun today.

Meanwhile, Sunday saw Dehradun witnessing a cloudy sky throughout most of the day with light rain and thunder being experienced towards the evening. The rain and thunder continued in the night, bringing much needed relief from the rising heat with the maximum and minimum temperatures in Dehradun and elsewhere in the State being recorded notches above normal for nearly a week. Kedarnath and other higher altitude areas witnessed light snowfall which also caused a further drop in the temperature. The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in various places on Sunday were 28.5 degrees Celsius and 16.8 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 23.4 degrees Celsius and 14.4 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 9.9 degrees Celsius and 8.3 degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 14.4 degrees Celsius and 8.7 degrees Celsius in New Tehri.
