Many Dehradun residents are including chia seeds in their diet plans as the city moves towards health-focused eating, driven by social media trends and growing fitness awareness. However, experts point out that these are not a shortcut to good health, while adding that those with certain health conditions should exercise caution.
From smoothies and detox water to overnight oats and breakfast bowls, chia seeds are now common in many households. Consumers say that the trend has picked up over the past couple of years, largely influenced by online content. A resident Sheetal Saklani said that she started using chia seeds after reading about their benefits online. “I first came across this on social media and then learnt about its benefits. I now add them to water or smoothies almost daily. I have seen considerable benefits in digestion and overall health,” she said.
Dietician Parul Goel said that the chia seeds do offer nutritional benefits. “They are rich in fibre, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, which can support digestion and heart health,” she said. However, she cautioned against improper use. “They should always be soaked before consumption. Eating them dry or in excess can cause bloating, gas or cramps, especially for those with sensitive digestion”. She further said that people with low blood pressure, allergies, kidney issues or those on blood-thinning medication should be careful and start with small quantities.
Local shopkeeper Upendra Rawat said that the demand has increased steadily. “Earlier, only a few people used to buy chia seeds, but now many young customers and gym-goers are buying them regularly,” he said, adding that most of the supply is imported.
Fitness trainer Vijay Jha said that the trend shows better awareness but warned against over-reliance. “Chia seeds can help, but they are not a shortcut. A balanced diet and regular exercise are still the most important,” he said.
