As temperatures rise, cases of diarrhoea and vomiting have increased among residents. Medical professionals said that heatwave conditions, commonly referred to as ‘Loo,’ contribute to these ailments.  They said that residents, particularly children, are advised to stay hydrated and maintain a healthy diet to avoid heat-related illnesses in the upcoming days.

The principal medical superintendent at Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital Dr Manu Jain said that the rise in mercury levels and the heatwave have led to an increase in cases of vomiting and diarrhoea at the hospital. He stated that the number of said cases in the outpatient department has surged by 10 per cent compared to normal days. During this period, children and young adults are particularly vulnerable to such illnesses. To prevent this, residents, especially individuals in the said age groups, are urged to take precautions, including increasing their water intake, drinking boiled water and consulting a doctor immediately in the case of vomiting or diarrhoea, he said.

The dietitian at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital Richa Kukreti said that as mercury levels rise, heat effects manifest, leading to various health problems for residents. She said that during this time, individuals may experience weakness, lethargy, digestive issues and fainting. To avoid these problems, maintaining a proper diet is essential, especially for children. Residents are advised to enhance their liquid intake, including water, coconut water, Shikanji, and Bel juice, to prevent dehydration.

Kukreti emphasised that parents should ensure their children’s meals include not just Roti and Sabzi but also a combination of fruits and salads in school tiffin. Schools should also incorporate fruit breaks for children. She recommended including onion in lunch and for children suggested that lassi or curd should be provided. Additionally, she encouraged individuals as well as children, to ensure they do not go to school or work without eating breakfast. It is also beneficial to incorporate a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables into the diet. She urged residents to consume dry fruits after soaking them instead of eating them unsoaked. She further said that people should avoid heavy meals at dinner time.
