To curb traffic violations and strengthen road safety ahead of the busy tourist season, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) Dehradun division plans to start a special enforcement drive in the first week of May, especially focusing on vehicles arriving from other States.

Talking to The Pioneer, the regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) for the Dehradun division Anita Chamola stated that it has been observed during the tourist season that vehicles entering from other States, especially from Delhi and Haryana, often do not adhere to traffic regulations. Many times, these vehicles are parked improperly, leading to traffic congestion. To address these issues and ensure road safety, the RTO has planned to organise a special enforcement drive targeting such vehicles during the tourist season, she said.

She added that the drive will commence in the first week of May and run till June. Enforcement squads, bike squads and interceptors will be deployed at designated locations. These squads will check vehicles, particularly those from outside the State, focusing on factors such as speeding, drunk driving and documentation. Additionally, the drive will ensure that private vehicles are not being used as commercial vehicles.

Chamola said that the enforcement will take place in Dehradun, Vikasnagar, Rishikesh and Haridwar. She said that one enforcement squad will be stationed on the Haridwar-Rishikesh route, as an additional team. On the said route, there is a check post already in place for the Char Dham Yatra. Another squad will be stationed at Asharodi in Dehradun. Additionally, a bike squad will also be stationed in Mussoorie, where shuttle services operate. Two bike squads will also be deployed on Sahastradhara and Rajpur routes.

She further informed that these squads will be equipped with tools to check violations, including speed radar guns and breath analyzers to assess alcohol consumption. The speed radar guns will be available for both the enforcement and bike squads during the drive. Whereas, the breath analyzer will only be available to the enforcement squad, Chamola said.

She further emphasised that strict action, including the issuance of challans or vehicle seizure, will be taken against vehicles found committing violations.
