The Forest department has begun the process of converting trees that have been washed down the Ganga from the mountains into a source of revenue. On the instructions of the ranger, Haridwar Forest Range, Shishpal Negi, a team, led by the deputy ranger Arvind Saini, is continuously engaged in identifying trees washed down the Ganga, measuring them, cutting them as needed and transporting them to the Forest Range office.
On Friday, the Forest team measured several large Sheesham trees found on the banks of the Ganga, cut them down and transported them to the Range office. Thereafter, they were towed to a safe location.
Shishpal said that the team has been instructed to mark the wood flowing in the Ganga as per the rules, measure it and dispose of it.
Looking at the number of precious trees like Sheesham that have been washed away in the Ganga, the Forest department is expecting a good revenue this time. Due to this exercise going on at the departmental level, it is also believed that revenue worth crores of rupees can be obtained this year from Haridwar Forest Range alone.
