The Special Task Force (STF) has arrested four members of a gang for alleged frauds in vehicle insurance that have possibly caused a loss of crores of rupees to the central and state governments.
The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of STF, Ajay Singh informed that STF was getting information for quite some time that vehicle owners in Dehradun are getting insurances of four wheelers and commercial vehicles at cheaper rates than the real prices of the insurance.
He said that the status of these insurances was also displayed as valid on the portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. “The STF teams started the investigation and arrested three men outside RTO in Dehradun and one man from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. They revealed during the investigation that after 2018, many companies started offering online insurance services for vehicle owners. They started posing as agents of these companies and started filing insurances online,” informed the SSP. He said that the accused revealed that they always provided real vehicle numbers to the website but during the submission of fee payment, they used to choose two-wheeler category to pay less amount. They used to photoshop the document to change the necessary details and send it to their customers.
When the vehicle owners check in the RTO website, it only displays the registration number of the vehicle and the validity date of the insurance that makes the insurance registration appear genuine to the customers, informed Singh. He said that many such agents are similarly providing insurance certificates to their customers across the country and many accept such certificates due to cheaper prices that causes huge loss of money to the state and central government. He said that STF is still collecting more information from the arrested accused on the matter.
