The Rishikesh police on Thursday arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly embezzling Rs 12.31 lakh from the Uttarakhand Cooperative Bank. The accused, identified as Deepak Badhai, allegedly collected money from account holders as a daily deposit agent but did not deposit the money in the bank. Police arrested Badhai from Uday Bagh in Vikasnagar.
Police said the case came to light after secretary and general manager of UCB SS Rana filed a complaint at Rishikesh police station on May 24. According to the complaint, Badhai had collected money from several account holders on different dates for depositing it in the bank.
However, instead of depositing the money, he misappropriated a total of Rs 12,31,458, police said. The alleged financial fraud involved money belonging to bank customers and prompted police to take action.
Following the complaint, police registered FIR No. 212/2026 under Section 316(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Rishikesh police station.
