MCD to commence anti-plastic campaign next week

Sunday, 20 March 2022 | PNS | Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will once again start the anti-plastic campaign next week. The corporation’s land section along with the sanitation section of the corporation will launch the campaign to restrict the usage of single-use plastics across the city. The chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said that teams of the municipal corporation have been checking the usage of single-use plastics by commercial bodies in the marketplaces but now the MCD will launch a full fledged campaign against the usage of plastic and other restricted materials like polystyrene items and single-use polypropylene carry bags. He said that the teams of the corporation were occupied due to assembly elections for about three months but the MCD will now ensure implementation of a proper plastic ban in the city. He said, “We have already started raising awareness about the importance of garbage segregation, recycling and composting before its disposal in various wards. The response to this campaign has been incredible. People are taking recycling and composting seriously. Though we will increase our efforts to ensure plastic usage decreases in the city, its proper disposal will help us to understand the level of its consumption by people as well as allow us to ensure its safe disposal.”

He said that the MCD teams are also taking action against littering in public places by imposing penalties and issuing notices to offenders and the same route will be adopted in the anti-plastic campaign. “We have been using nukkad natak, workshops and door to door awareness campaigns to raise awareness among locals about segregation, composting, plastic-usage among others for over a month now. It is certainly a part of Swacch Survekshan 2022 but the anti-plastic campaign, which will be initiated next week, will go on irrespective of this cleanliness survey to minimise plastic usage. We are certain that our efforts in association with the contribution of the public, plastic usage will decline in the city to a greater extent in the upcoming months,” said Khanna.
