The Mussoorie-Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) has started a special ‘Save Fuel Campaign’ in Dehradun following chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s directive. The campaign aims to reduce fuel use, save electricity and promote environment friendly habits among government employees, MDDA vice-chairmanm Banshidhar Tiwari said.

The move comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to the people across the country to save petrol, diesel and electricity. In a recent cabinet meeting, the Uttarakhand government had decided to take practical steps for energy conservation in line with the PM’s exhortations.

Under the new plan, the number of vehicles used by the CM and ministers will be reduced by half. The government also plans to introduce one ‘No Vehicle Day’ every week. Work from home may also be used when needed.

The MDDA officials said that unnecessary use of air conditioners and electricity in offices will also be reduced.

“Officers and staff have been asked to use car- pooling while coming to office. Employees living near the office have been encouraged to walk or use bicycles. These small steps can help reduce fuel consumption and traffic pressure in the city,” Tiwari said and added that MDDA has also issued directions to switch off lights, computers and other electrical devices when not in use. Limited use of central air conditioning systems has also been advised at the MDDA headquarters.

Tiwari further said that the campaign is not only about saving money but also about protecting the environment. “Dehradun is already facing mounting traffic and pollution problems. If more people use shared vehicles, bicycles, or walk to work, it will reduce carbon emissions and help make the city cleaner,” he added.
