The registrar general and census commissioner of India, Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan has said that for the first time in the history of India, the entire census process is being done in a digital format. He said that digitisation will improve the quality of data and make errors easier to correct.

Narayan was in Dehradun on Thursday to monitor the progress of the census work in the State. He also visited some homes in the Dehra Khas area of the city to observe the census process closely and gather information from the field staff. Narayan also interacted with the supervisors, enumerators and locals during the visit.

He said that the enthusiasm people are showing for the census work across the country, including Uttarakhand, is remarkable.   Narayan told media persons that for the first time, the option of self-enumeration has been provided to the people.  In response to a question, Narayan stated that conducting the census digitally is extremely challenging. He added that field staff have the option of collecting data offline, but it is being compulsorily converted to a digital format.

Narayan claimed that there have been no reports of any law and order or technical difficulties in the census anywhere in the country. He said that due to the digital census, results can be expected to be released soon.

During his visit, the registrar general and census commissioner also inaugurated the new office building of the Census Operations Directorate in Dehradun. Until now, the Census Directorate’s work had been operating from a rented building in Matawala Bagh.

Secretary Deepak Kumar, director Eva Ashish Srivastava, joint director Shailendra Singh Negi, deputy directors Tanya Seth, Praveen Kumar, RK Banwari and other officers accompanied Narayan.
