In an attempt to give a broader perspective to its demand for restoration of the old pension scheme (OPS), the Uttarakhand unit of National Movement for Old Pension Scheme (NMOPS) has decided to pay homage to the martyrs of the Tiladi incident on May 30. The president of the state unit of NMOPS, Jeet Mani Painuli said that the meeting of the state executive was held on Monday in which it was decided that all the members of the movement would pay homage to martyrs of the Tiladi incident. He said that all the district units of the NMOPS would hold meetings on May 30, the anniversary of the Tiladi incident. The NMOPS would also hold seminars on the day in which intellectuals, government employees, officers, teachers and social workers would take part. In these seminars discussions on the OPS and its social security aspect would be discussed. Painuli said that all the employee unions who have extended their support to the cause of OPS would participate in the programme.
The meeting was attended by regional general secretary Mukesh Raturi, Treasurer Shantanu Sharma and other office bearers.
It is pertinent to mention here that the NMOPS wants that the employees covered under the New Pension Scheme (NPS) should be brought under the cover of OPS. The NPS was started in the year 2004 by the Manmohan Singh government to reduce the ever increasing burden of pension on state exchequer. Under it a portion of the salary of the employees is deducted every month and the government makes an equal contribution and a retirement corpus is built. The employees receive a pension from this corpus. The employees are finding the NPS non lucrative and are demanding the restoration of OPS in which the retiring employee gets 50 per cent of his last drawn salary as pension.
