The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) chairwoman Kusum Kandwal has stated that women are increasingly becoming victims of cybercrime and unhealthy relationships initiated through social media interactions with strangers. These relationships, formed under the guise of digital friendships are damaging marital lives and leading individuals astray. She expressed this concern while highlighting the growing negative impact of social media on society and the breakdown of family relationships.
She said that today’s youth and children are so absorbed in the virtual world of social media that their ties to family, culture and values are becoming increasingly tenuous. This erosion of values is contributing significantly to the misguidance of young women. Many girls, especially those living away from home for studies or employment, find themselves emotionally disconnected from their families, becoming further entangled in this online quagmire. The commission has warned that the outcomes of such relationships can be tragic, often resulting in significant mental and social suffering for both the individuals involved and their families. Kandwal appealed to parents, urging them to communicate regularly with their children and inquire about their daily activities. It is essential for parents to monitor their children’s lifestyles, friendships and changing habits over time. Kandwal encouraged women to use technology for their own advancement and to deepen their understanding of cultural values. She assured that the commission will take note of this issue and make every effort to raise awareness among future generations, including their parents and family members. “ The government and the commission are fully committed to ensuring the safety of women, but family members also play a crucial role in this endeavour,” she said.
