The minister of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, Ganesh Joshi on Wednesday flagged off a group of 28 farmers from Dehradun district along with two Horticulture officials for a five-day training programme on apple and kiwi production under the District Plan. The farmers were sent from the minister’s camp office. The training will be conducted at Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan, Himachal Pradesh.
Addressing the farmers, Joshi said that Uttarakhand has immense potential for high-value crops such as apple and kiwi. He said that such training programmes help farmers gain knowledge about modern farming techniques, improved varieties, plant protection and marketing, which would contribute to increasing their income. “The State government is continuously working towards making farmers self-reliant,” he asserted.
The minister said that earlier, under the same initiative, 56 farmers from Dehradun district had been sent to Pantnagar University for training in protected cultivation (polyhouse farming). He expressed confidence that after returning, the trained farmers would share their experience with others, giving a new direction to horticulture in the district as well as the State.
