With the festive season drawing near, the Food Safety and Drug Administration department has started cracking down on food adulteration and those involved in the business in the city. Earlier, a campaign was launched in Haldwani through a mobile food safety van under the guidance of deputy commissioner Kumaon Rajan Singh Kathait and district food safety officer Ajab Singh Rawat.
The team inspected about 100 food items at Sindhi Chowk out of which 20 were found substandard. These included sweets, milk, cheese, pulses, rice and spices.
The department officers stated that notices are being issued to the retailers and wholesalers whose samples have failed. “They are being strictly instructed to stop selling the failed items,” said a senior Food Safety officer, adding that all dealing with food items have been asked to improve quality.
Along with checking through the mobile food vans, the department officers are also making the shopkeepers as well as the common people aware as to why they should refrain from selling and consuming adulterated food items.
The deputy commissioner ( laboratory), Food Safety department, B S Bisht said that three mobile food vans have been operating across Uttarakhand. “They are moving to different districts, testing samples on their way,” he said, adding that a larger campaign would be launched in the coming days so that adulteration is completely stopped in the festive season.
