Nainital district Congress staged a demonstration in Haldwani on Thursday against what the party called objectionable and indecent language used by the BJP’s national president Nitin Nabin against the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. During the stir, Nabin’s effigy was torched.
Addressing the gathering, the district Congress president Rahul Chhimwal and Haldwani city Congress president Govind Singh Bisht said that the language was unbecoming of a person who held a high position in the ruling party. “Political opposition is a part of democracy and hurling abuses on the LoP amounts to an assault on democracy itself,” Chhimwal said.
Echoing him, Bisht said that Gandhi has been a consistent and forceful voice on issues pertaining to the interests of the common people.
Other senior leaders of the district Congress said that when the country faces serious issues such as inflation, unemployment, corruption and migration. “Instead of addressing these issues, the BJP is stooping to personal vendetta. This violates the norms of democracy,” said a district Mahila Congress leader.
