Congress questions short duration of budget session of Vidhan Sabha

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

Uttarakhand Congress has objected to the short duration of the upcoming five day budget session of Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha scheduled at the summer capital Gairsain. The session will commence on March 9.

The leader of opposition (LoP) in State Vidhan Sabha, Yashpal Arya told The Pioneer that by deciding to hold a five day session the government has shown that it only intends to get the budget passed. He said that the government should ensure that the duration of the upcoming budget session of Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha is of at least 21 days.  He said that a total of nine assembly sessions have so far been organised during the current fifth Vidhan Sabha- the tenure of which commenced on March 29, 2022- and only 32 sittings ( working days) have so far been held which is very less when compared with other states. Arya added that during these 32 days, question hour was never held on Mondays when the chief minister answers to the questions related to the departments headed by him. He said that during the upcoming budget session also the question hour will not be held on Monday. The LoP said that the Congress party has consistently been raising the demand for extended sessions of Vidhan Sabha and its members will definitely raise the issue in the house during the session.

The Manglaur MLA, Qazi Nizamuddin said that the proposed five day budget session of Vidhan Sabha is against the rules and regulations. He said that according to the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha work execution regulation -2005, four days should be reserved for discussion on the address of the governor and four day for discussion on budget. Apart from it no discussion should be held on the day the budget is presented. He said that the members have submitted more than 500 questions and other legislative works are needed to be done which will not be possible during a short budget session.
