Taking advantage of the LPG cylinder crunch, cyber fraudsters have started targeting people through fake gas booking messages. The cyber police station has received six complaints in this matter, including two from Dehradun and four from the Kumaon region.
The cyber police unit has become active and issued an advisory to alert the public. People have been advised to book gas cylinders only through official numbers and trusted sources.
The assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Cyber Unit Kush Mishra said that complaints regarding LPG fraud have been received. “Fortunately, in these cases, people did not send any money to the fraudsters. We are working to tackle this scam,” he added.
Mishra further said that fraudsters are sending fake messages asking people to book LPG cylinders urgently and are also asking for OTPs. He warned people not to share their OTPs with anyone under any circumstances. “Strict actions will be taken against those involved in black marketing of cylinders or any kind of fraud if anyone receives suspicious calls or messages, they should immediately report them by dialling 1930,” he said.
“Due to the shortage of cylinders, people may panic and fall easy prey for fraudsters or black marketers. They should not panic and send money to unknown persons. They may be duped,” he warned.
