Action on Bageshwar doctors: Govt doctors threaten stir

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Provincial Medical Health Services Association (PMHSA) in Uttarakhand has threatened to launch a State-wide protest unless the administration withdraws its unilateral action against doctors at Bageshwar District Hospital.

According to the PMHSA on July 10, 2025, a child in critical condition, suffering from brain fever, was brought to the District Hospital at 6 PM. The child was examined by Emergency Medical Officer (EMO) Dr Bhupendra Ghatiyal, who then called paediatrician Dr Ankit Kumar, who was on rounds at the hospital. Both doctors immediately attended to the child. Due to the child’s critical state and the hospital’s limited resources, they referred him to a higher centre. Once at Sushila Tiwari Hospital in Haldwani, the child received treatment but sadly passed away on July 16, 2025, due to the severity of his condition.

The general secretary of the association, Dr Ramesh Kunwar said that the association contends that the doctors and hospital staff demonstrated no negligence or insensitivity in this case. However, following unnecessary media uproar and misleading posts on social media platforms like YouTube, the administration acted against the doctors and staff.

The association argues that the administration should be addressing the misconduct of individuals who enter emergency rooms, ICUs, wards and outpatient departments with cameras, filming and creating chaos. Such behavior not only disrupts medical care but also increases the risk of infection and puts patients’ lives in danger, especially in difficult, remote and mountainous regions like Bageshwar.
