Eye allergy cases rise amid flowering season

The combination of dust and pollen grains has led to an increase in eye allergies among people in Dehradun, doctors said. They said that the number of outpatient department (OPD) cases of eye allergies has risen by 10 to 20 per cent compared to normal days. Considering this, doctors have urged the public to take necessary precautions to prevent these allergies and to seek medical advice rather than resorting to self-medication.
Talking to The Pioneer, senior eye specialist at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital Dr Sushil Ojha said that the increase in eye allergies is linked to both dust and the pollen grains during the flowering season. He observed that currently there have been 10 to 12 more cases of eye allergies at the OPD every day, with common symptoms including redness, watery eyes and itching. This rise in cases has been evident over the past few days and is expected to continue for about a month. Additionally, individuals who spend time outdoors, especially children, are more likely to suffer from these allergies. Compared to normal days, there has been a 10 per cent increase in eye allergy cases during this period. To prevent these allergies, individuals are advised to avoid direct sunlight, wear protective glasses to shield themselves from dust and pollen and wash their eyes when closing them, rather than keeping them open, he said.
Another eye specialist Dr Amit Singh said that dust from road work, combined with the seasonal change and the pollen, has contributed to the rise in eye allergies among Dehradun residents. He indicated that there has been a 20 to 25 per cent increase in eye allergies over the past month compared to normal days. Common symptoms include watery eyes, itching and redness. To mitigate these effects, individuals are encouraged to wear protective glasses. Children under 12 years old are particularly susceptible due to their developing immune systems; therefore, it is crucial for this age group to take precautions. Additionally, those who typically experience pollen allergies each year should ensure they wear protective eyewear. Singh advised anyone experiencing symptoms of allergy to consult a doctor promptly and to avoid rubbing their eyes, as this can worsen the condition.
