Food safety fears stir up homemade cooking in festive season

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The heightened concern over food adulteration has prompted many Dehradun residents to prepare sweets and other dishes at home for the approaching festival season. They have expressed that, unlike past years, instances of food tampering have become prevalent as the festival nears, raising significant health concerns. Rather than relying on authorities to address the issue, they have chosen to invest additional effort in homemade treats for the festivities.

A resident, Manju Aggarwal shared that in the past, she would typically purchase sweets and other food items from the market. However, this year marks a shift in her perspective during the festival season. Following numerous reports of food adulteration over the past couple of years, she feels compelled to prioritise the health of herself and her family. Consequently, she has decided to embrace traditional methods, preparing sweets at home for the festival, ensuring that they are not only fresh but also safe from food adulteration, she said.

“My wife has decided to prepare sweets at home for the upcoming festival instead of purchasing them from the market, given the incidents of food adulteration. She has already started the preparations, such as making Mawa from milk and other items,” stated Madan Saxena.

He believed that making sweets and snacks during the festive season is a wise choice, as food adulteration tends to rise during this time.

Another resident, Pooja Chaudhary, expressed her concern that the authorities have not taken effective measures to permanently address the issue of food adulteration. This situation has prompted increased awareness among residents. She has chosen to prepare dishes, including sweets, Mathri and others, at home for this festive season rather than buying them from the market.
