PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) team in Dehradun carried out an inspection at Niranjanpur Mandi to check the quality of fruits and vegetables being sold to the public on Thursday. Officials collected samples of Mango, Banana, Papaya, Parwal, Capsicum and Tinda for testing.

The action was taken under the directions of the food safety commissioner, Sachin Kurve and district magistrate Savin Bansal, who have asked officials to ensure that people get safe and healthy food.

The inspection was led by the deputy commissioner (Garhwal Division) RS Rawat along with assistant commissioner Manish Sayana. During the visit, the team checked whether harmful chemicals were being used to ripen fruits and whether artificial colours were being added to vegetables.

The collected fruits samples would be examined in a laboratory to find out if they meet safety standards, officials said, adding that if any harmful substances are found, strict action would be taken against the traders responsible.

The inspection team included several food safety officers from different areas, including Dehradun city, Vikasnagar and Mussoorie, along with officials from the Mandi Parishad. The team also interacted with vendors and warned them against using chemicals or artificial colours in food items.

Rawat said that such inspections would continue in different parts of the district to ensure food safety.
