The Centre for Folk Art and Culture Performance at Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University has organised “Narendra Sangeet Week” to honour the contributions of folk singer Narendra Singh Negi to the music of Uttarakhand. More than 80 participants from across the country have submitted entries for singing and will perform on this platform, according to the officials. The event showcases the musical tradition of Negi, who has represented the folk culture of Uttarakhand throughout his illustrious 52-year long career.
In the inaugural ceremony, Negi expressed gratitude to the university, stating that it is a privilege for his work to be recognised in such a meaningful way. He said that events like this create opportunities for youth. He captivated the audience with his famous song, “Thando Re Thando, Mera Pahad Ki Hawa Thandi Pani Thando.”
The vice-chancellor of the university, Shri Prakash Singh, described the initiative as highly positive and a milestone in promoting folk culture. He said that Negi has made significant contributions to Uttarakhand’s cultural heritage and continues to inspire younger generations. VC also appreciated the efforts of the Centre for Folk Art and Culture Performance and expressed hope that it would establish a reputation similar to institutions like Prayag Sangeet Samiti, where every music learner aspires to be recognised. He further stated that the centre would work toward preserving Uttarakhand’s traditional instruments, such as the Dhol, as well as its folk traditions and the contributions of past artists, ensuring their transmission to future generations.
On this occasion, the centre founder, D R Purohit, noted that similar traditions exist in Bengal in the form of Rabindra Sangeet and that Uttarakhand has a worthy artist in Negi. He described the event as a significant step by the university in establishing a new cultural tradition.
Officials informed that on the first day of Narendra Sangeet Week, performers including Hemlata Bisht (Satpuli) and Ambika Kimothi (Rishikesh), among others presented their songs. Artists from all age groups and regions are participating in the programme.
