PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun

Nearly 8,000 metric tonnes of garbage has been cleared by the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) during a large-scale special cleanliness drive “100 Days One Mission- Reviving Our Rivers” launched on March 8 to strengthen the city’s drainage system ahead of the monsoon.

The campaign focuses on the systematic cleaning of major drains, subsidiary channels and internal nalas in a phased manner. So far, cleaning of nine major drains has been completed, while work on the remaining is underway on war footing. During the drive so far, about 7,922.94 metric tonnes of waste, including plastic, solid waste and other obstructions, have been removed. The operation is being carried out using six JCB machines, seven dumpers and nine tractor trolleys to ensure proper and scientific disposal of waste.

Special attention is being given to waterlogging-prone areas to prevent flooding during the rainy season. The municipal commissioner Namami Bansal has directed officials to maintain quality, transparency and timely execution, with regular inspections being conducted to monitor progress.

The civic body has also appealed to residents not to dump garbage, plastic or construction waste into drains, stressing that public participation is key to maintaining a clean and waterlogging-free city. The campaign will continue with the aim of ensuring better drainage management across Dehradun.
