Lake formed in Yamuna due to debris, locals shifted

Debris from the Gadhgad mountain stream (gadera) have affected the flow of the Yamuna river and created a lake at Syanachatti in Uttarkashi district. Taking serious cognisance of the situation, the district administration has taken action to get the Syanachatti bazaar, nearby homes and hotels vacated. The affected persons have been shifted to safer locations.
With the level of water rising in the temporary lake, a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed at the scene to mitigate the risk. The personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police and district administration are also monitoring the situation. Officials state that all necessary resources have been collected in the area for rescue and relief operation.
Uttarkashi district magistrate Prashant Arya said that attempts to drain the lake in a controlled manner will be undertaken late on Thursday evening or on Friday morning. The administration is fully prepared to deal with any type of emergency situation, he averred. On receiving information about the formation of the lake, the district magistrate reached the district disaster smart control room to seek information about the situation and directed officials to ensure necessary rescue and relief measures.
Meanwhile, the formation of the lake in the Yamuna has caused anxiety among resident of Syanachatti and nearby areas. The locals fear major destruction in case the lake breaks through the debris blocking the flow of the river. The presence of NDRF, SDRF, police and others is providing some relief to the locals. The district administration has issued directions to monitor the lake and the flow of the Yamuna river round the clock. The authorities have also appealed to the residents of nearby villages to remain alert.
