Locals protest against delay in compensation in human-wildlife conflict cases

Residents of the city and neighbouring rural areas here took out a rally on Monday to the office of the Nanda Devi national park where they demanded concrete steps to resolve the human-wildlife conflict in the area. The divisional forest officer assured the people that considering the movement of wild animals, the department will increase patrolling in the city and rural areas. Adequate compensation will be paid for the damage caused by wildlife, the DFO said.

Residents of various villages along with public representatives and city residents took out a rally to the national park office. They informed the DFO about the problems being faced by the people due to the human-wildlife conflict. They said that bears, boars and langurs are causing considerable damage to agriculture and homes in the region, adding that the department does not provide timely compensation for the damage. Officials said that the compensation had been paid for damage caused by wild animals till May-June. The department has forwarded the demand for compensation for damage after June and will provide it as soon as the funds are provided.
