Joint committee to keep a check on builders to prevent fraud

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE Dehradun

With rising complaints of incomplete projects, poor-quality construction and illegal development, the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) is preparing to form a joint committee that will monitor real-estate projects more strictly. The committee, which will include officials from MDDA, RERA and other departments, will review financial details of builders and verify whether ongoing projects follow approved layouts and rules. Apart from this the authority is continuing to work on complaints received regarding unauthorised construction in the area.

MDDA vice chairman Banshidhar Tiwari said that safeguarding the interests of homebuyers is a priority and only developers with proper financial transparency and a clean record will be permitted to start new projects. Strict penalties and blacklisting will be enforced against builders who violate norms or delay projects.

It should be mentioned here that builder-related frauds have already led to tension in the city. At least three builders had already absconded. Recently the Garg family may have escaped to Kenya. Earlier, two builders— Deepak Mittal and Sunil Viyas had also absconded. In one case, frustrated buyers reportedly assaulted a RERA field officer after repeated complaints allegedly went unanswered. Many buyers claim they have lost lakhs of rupees to stalled or abandoned housing projects on the same plot or due to builders fleeing after collecting money. Meanwhile, Dwarikapuri resident Radha Chaudhary has lodged a complaint with the MDDA, alleging that a building is being constructed at Peepal Chowk without any official approval. She claimed that the work is being carried out without a sanctioned map, and violations of FAR and setback rules are clearly visible.

According to her, the structure is also being used for commercial purposes, which is against the norms and is causing safety issues and inconvenience to nearby residents. MDDA secretary Mohan Singh said that a team will soon inspect the site and appropriate action will be taken if the construction is found illegal.
