PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Residents of Dehradun are concerned about the probability of a potential shortage of fuel and cooking gas due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US/Israel. With reports of shortages in commercial gas cylinders and anxiety about possibility of fuel price hikes, an expert advised people to remain calm, as excessive anxiety can negatively impact mental and physical health.

The authorities have clarified that there is an adequate stock of domestic LPG cylinders in the State. However, the anticipation of future shortages has raised concerns among residents.

Sanjeev Jaiswal expressed said that the Iran situation has created a tense atmosphere for people in Dehradun. “Everyone in my community and family is discussing the potential shortage of gas cylinders, petrol and other essentials, which is causing anxiety,” he said. He often thinks about stocking up on gas cylinders and petrol in case of a worsening situation, Jaiswal added.

Another local Meena Dixit said that the stressful anticipation of shortages has affected her sleep. She said that during the day, her friends talk mostly about how to tackle the situation in advance. Many Doonites have voiced similar apprehensions about the possible shortage of gas cylinders and fuel, as well as the prospect of rising prices of Petrol, among others. Clinical psychologist Dr Pratibha Sharma stated that the increased fear of shortages has spread among residents largely due to social media. Content related to the conflict and its implications has gone viral, negatively affecting the mental health of many. She cautioned that such fears could lead to increased anxiety and, in severe cases, anxiety attacks. To mitigate these effects on mental and physical health, Sharma advised people to trust that the government and concerned authorities are there to assist and recommended limiting screen time and avoiding distressing content on social media during this period.
