The Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD) department minister Rekha Arya stated that the Nari Shakti Vandan Act marks a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey, promoting greater involvement of women in decision-making roles. She made these comments during a press conference in Haridwar on Monday.
Notably, Arya, accompanied by other party officials, witnessed the virtual address delivered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Nari Shakti Vandan Conference.
Arya said that the concept of granting political reservations for women has been a topic of conversation for nearly 40 years. Despite various attempts to advance this initiative, and the bill having been passed by the Rajya Sabha in 2010, it was yet to be addressed in the Lok Sabha, she said.
She further pointed out that for many years, various political parties have included women’s reservation in their manifestos, but have lacked a genuine commitment to actual implementation. “The present Central government has prioritised the passage of this significant bill during the special session of Parliament, demonstrating strong leadership and a clear intention,” she stated.
She further informed that this Act will allocate 33 per cent of seats in the Lok Sabha and State assemblies for women, enabling them to engage not just in policymaking but also in leading decision-making processes. She emphasised that the law will foster more sensitive and inclusive policies, elevate women’s issues and enhance their respect in society. Additionally, it will encourage a new generation of girls to pursue leadership roles, she said.
