Premnagar murder: Doon police launch ‘Operation Night Watch’

Three days after the murder of a B Tech student in campus rivalry in Premnagar, Dehradun police have started a special night drive called ‘Operation Night Watch’ from Thursday to rein in the unruly elements among the student community concentrated in this area of the city.    

The senior superintendent of police (SSP), Dehradun, Pramendra Dobal said that they would not be allowed under any circumstances to roam about unnecessarily in groups in night hours under the pretext of studies. “Strict legal action will be taken against those flouting the rules. They may even face rustication from their respective colleges or universities,” he added.

In the last two days, police have taken strong action against the violators of rules. A total of 71 people were arrested for drunk driving and their vehicles were seized. The vehicles impounded including 21 four-wheelers and 50 two-wheelers.

Police also seized 12 vehicles for using illegal hooters, black films and for rash driving. Additionally, 98 drivers were fined for violating traffic rules and fines worth thousands of rupees were collected.

In the last two days, during the night checking drive, police checked more than 2,600 vehicles and questioned over 1,900 people. Around 288 people found roaming unnecessarily at night were stopped, and 156 suspicious persons were taken to the police station for further inquiry.

Police also acted against 99 people under the Police Act and imposed a fine of Rs 49,500.

The SSP has warned that such checking drives will continue to maintain law and order in the city.
