Two women in Dehradun lost a total of Rs 4.13 lakh to cyber fraudsters in two separate incidents. The fraudsters used different methods to cheat the victims. Nehru Colony police have registered cases in both incidents and started investigations.
In the first case, a woman from Raj Rajeshwari Vihar in Natthanpur lost Rs 2.97 lakh. According to her complaint, her husband searched for the phone number of a doctor on Google on July 27. The number shown in the search results was allegedly linked to cyber fraudsters.
The fraudsters contacted the family and offered to provide an online appointment. They sent an APK file through WhatsApp and asked the family to install it on their phone. After getting access to the phone, the fraudsters allegedly transferred Rs 2.97 lakh from their bank account.
In the second case, a woman from Badripur Road near Jogiwala Chowk lost Rs 1.15 lakh. She received a call from unknown persons who told her that she had won a gift card worth Rs 5,000. The callers first asked her to pay Rs 1,045 as shipping charges and for collection of the prize amount. She transferred the money to their UPI account. Later, they asked her to enter a promo code. After she followed their instructions, Rs 1.15 lakh was withdrawn from her account in two transactions.
The Nehru Colony police in-charge Manoj Nautiyal said cases have been registered in both incidents. Police are investigating the transactions and trying to identify the cyber fraudsters.
