U’khand weightlifter wins bronze at National Games

Uttarakhand athlete Vivek Pandey secured a bronze medal in the men’s 109+ kilogramme weight category weightlifting at the 38th National Games on Monday. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as Uttarakhand did not compete in this category during the previous National Games. Pandey, who hails from Tanakpur in the Champawat district, began weightlifting two years ago.

Sports minister Rekha Arya highlighted the significance of this accomplishment and congratulated Pandey for this. He said, “Raising one’s level so high with just two years of practice is a remarkable feat. It showcased the passion, determination and dedication of this athlete.” She further added that Pandey’s success has provided a new identity to the state’s weightlifting sector and will inspire more youth in Uttarakhand to pursue the sport.

 Pandey credited his parents and coach for his success. He said, “I started weightlifting two years ago and my coaches played a significant role in my development. I give full credit for this achievement to my parents.”

Additionally, at the 38th National Games competitions taking place in Uttarakhand, head constable Lavish Kumar from the Pauri Police also achieved success by winning a bronze medal in the men’s 85 kilogramme Wushu category. Regarding this, Senior Superintendent of Police of Pauri, Lokeshwar Singh, congratulated Kumar on his accomplishment and extended his best wishes for continued success in the future.
