Three days of rain, thunder and snowfall forecast in State

The State is likely to experience rain and snowfall in various places during a three-day period starting on Sunday. The temperatures are expected to drop by a few degrees after October 18. The State meteorological centre has issued a yellow warning (watch) regarding the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied with lighting/hail likely to occur at isolated places in Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts on Sunday. Apart from this, very light to light rainfall is likely to occur at a few places in Almora, Nainital, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar districts and at many places in the remaining districts today.

The provisional State capital Dehradun is forecast to witness partly to generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain accompanied with lighting/hail likely to occur toward the evening/night. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be about 30 degrees Celsius and 18 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun today.

The State meteorological centre director Bikram Singh informed that weather activity is expected on October 15, 16 and 17 due to a western disturbance. The activity will start on Sunday night with light rain in various parts of the State and snowfall in the higher reaches. Thunderstorm with lightning, hail, rain and snowfall are expected on Sunday night and Monday.  The activity is expected to peak on Monday with light to medium rain and snowfall in various high altitude regions.

The snowfall is expected in the places situated at altitudes of 3,500 metres and above in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar districts. The activity will become light on Tuesday. Singh further said that since the Char Dham are located in high altitude regions, these locations are expected to experience swift temperature drop with sub zero temperatures likely during the night. Pilgrims are advised to take necessary precautions. He further said that the weather is expected to clear on October 18. However, from then onward the temperatures are expected to drop by two to three degrees Celsius. This will increase the cold especially in the mountainous regions, Singh added.
