The Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital will start retina surgery from May 15. Informing this, the senior eye specialist working for the State –run medical facility, Dr Sushil Ojha said on Monday that the hospital is providing basic eye treatments and medications. “However, responding to the surging demand from patients who cannot afford private hospital expenses, GDMC administration has decided to start retina surgeries itself,” he added.
He further said that the hospital has a specialist for this purpose and the required machinery known as Biome has been successfully installed. “Only some final preparations are left to be completed and these will be done shortly,” he said.
Asked for details about the retina surgery, Ojha stated that retina surgery is simply known as Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV). “This surgery is typically used to repair a retinal tear, hole or detachment and can take an average of two to three hours to complete successfully. While anyone can be at risk of developing retinal problems warranting surgery, it is more commonly conducted on individuals who have experienced eye infection post- basic operations like cataract surgery. Eye injuries and other traumatic experiences can also lead to the need for retina surgery. Symptoms of these conditions may include vision problems and blood clots in eyes among others,” said Ojha.
He further said that individuals who are experiencing such symptoms in their eyes should immediately seek medical attention to prevent the need for surgery. “As per my professional experiences for years, early treatment with medication in some cases can stop the condition from assuming seriousness requiring surgery. Further, regular check-up with an eye specialist can help identify issues early and prevent the need for surgery altogether,” he said.
