The Bharatiya Janata Party has given a three-day deadline to its party workers who failed to withdraw their nominations against official candidates in the ensuing civic elections. The party leadership has entrusted senior leaders, including former chief ministers, MPs, MLAs and other office-bearers with the task of engaging with these dissenting members to persuade them to support the party’s official nominees.

Addressing the media at the part’s State office here on Monday, BJP’s State general secretary Aditya Kothari emphasised the party’s commitment to resolving the issue amicably. “We are giving these workers time till the evening of January 8 to reconsider their stance and publicly announce their support to the official candidates of BJP. This decision reflects the party’s sensitivity to the contributions of those who have worked tirelessly for the organisation over the years,” he said.

Kothari informed that senior leaders have been specifically assigned to initiate dialogue with the rebel workers and ensure that they extend their support to the official candidates. This effort is aimed at maintaining unity within the party and upholding discipline. However, he warned that disciplinary action will be taken against those who refuse to comply after the deadline.

Acknowledging the contributions of the rebel candidates, Kothari stated, “Many of these individuals have been associated with the BJP for decades and have made significant contributions to the party’s growth. It is understandable that personal political ambitions or other reasons may have led them to contest against official candidates. Therefore, the party has decided to provide them with another opportunity to reconsider their decisions.” He stated that the BJP intends to approach this matter with compassion and firmness, emphasising that disciplinary action will be a last resort.

The party’s leadership remains hopeful that most dissenting workers will align themselves with the party’s official candidates, ensuring a united front in the ensuing civic elections, he added. It is pertinent to mention here that both the BJP and Congress are facing rebellion from party workers unhappy with candidate selection for the ULB polls.
