Dehradun police arrested a man within 24 hours for allegedly stealing a silver canopy from a temple in the Dalanwala area. The stolen canopy, worth about Rs 60,000, was recovered from the accused. The accused identified as Yogesh Semwal was arrested from near Nayagaon Road in Hathibadkala on Sunday.
According to the police, a complaint was filed on June 26 by Arvind Prasad, a resident of Dilaram Bazaar. He reported that an unknown person had stolen the silver canopy placed above the Shivling at Shri Radha Krishna Temple in Dilaram Bazaar. A case was registered at Dalanwala police station. On the instructions of Dehradun senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobal, a team was formed to investigate the case quickly. The police examined CCTV footage from the temple and nearby roads, collected information about suspects and activated their informer network. During a checking operation on June 27, acting on a tip-off, the police arrested Semwal. The stolen silver canopy was recovered from his possession.
During questioning, the accused told the police that he is addicted to drugs and stole the silver canopy to arrange money for his vice. Police said that the accused is a 39-year-old native of Rishidhar village in Tehri district. Further investigation into the case is underway.
