Cancer patient’s breast reconstructed at SMI hospital

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

For the first time in Uttarakhand, after completely removing the breast of a woman suffering from multicentric breast cancer, a successful reconstruction was carried out by creating a new breast using the patient’s own muscles and skin, the Shri Mahant Indiresh hospital has claimed. This complex surgery was performed under the leadership of the hospital’s senior cancer surgeon Dr Ajit Tiwari.

In medical science, this condition is known as multicentric breast cancer, in which multiple cancerous lumps develop in different parts of the breast. In such cases, partial surgery is not possible and a total mastectomy becomes necessary. In this case, along with total mastectomy, autologous whole breast reconstruction was performed, in which tissues from the patient’s own body were used to reconstruct the breast.

The hospital officials said that till now, such surgeries have generally involved the use of silicone breast implants, which carry risks such as infection, implant failure, hardening of the breast, pain, and the possible need for repeat surgeries in the future. According to Tiwari, “Breast reconstruction using the patient’s own body significantly reduces the risk of implant-related complications. The breast looks more natural, sensitivity is better preserved, and long-term outcomes are safer.” This surgery demands expertise, including in-depth anatomical knowledge, microsurgical skills and extreme precision. This technique offers a new ray of hope, especially for young female patients who wish to lead a normal and confident life even after overcoming cancer.
