PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

Demanding central bureau of investigation (CBI) probe in the suicide of farmer Sukhwant Singh of Paigha village of Kashipur, Udham Singh Nagar, the Uttarakhand Congress held  a protest march to the police headquarters on Friday.

The Congress party leaders and workers took out a march from the  Rajiv Bhawan to the police headquarters. After holding the protest, the Congress leaders submitted a memorandum to the director general of Police.

In its memorandum, the Congress Party stated that on January 10, 2026, Sukhwant Singh committed suicide due to police harassment. This incident is not only extremely serious but also creates an atmosphere of fear, insecurity, dissatisfaction and anger among the general public and farmers of the area. As per the information received from the deceased farmer’s family and local residents, the police were protecting land mafias who committed fraud and Singh who had filed a complaint, was being continuously harassed.

The Congress leaders stated that the incident is an example of deteriorating law and order situation in the State.  The harassment and arrogance of power by the police administration forced a farmer to commit suicide, devastating an entire family. The Congress party also stated that the deceased farmer’s death declaration explicitly named the Senior Superintendent of Police of Udham Singh Nagar district, implying that his role in supporting land mafias was the reason the deceased took his own life. It is also concerning that the police department has not yet removed the accused Senior Superintendent of Police from his post.

The Congress delegation led by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Ganesh Godiyal, leader of opposition Yashpal Arya, former chief minister Harish Rawat and others met the DG and demanded that SSP of US Nagar should be suspended and a case should be registered against him.
