MCD proposes to develop 64 parks on government land

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun
The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has prepared a Rs 16 crore proposal to develop 64 government land plots into parks and green spaces. These sites were cleared of encroachment during a recent anti-encroachment drive in the provisional State capital. Municipal commissioner Namami Bansal said that the proposal has been sent to the State government for approval. The tender process will begin once clearance is received.
Bansal said that the plan includes construction and upgrading of parks with basic facilities such as children’s play areas, seating arrangements and plantation work. The project will cover both newly identified sites and existing parks that require improvement. She added that the initiative is part of the corporation’s efforts to expand green spaces in areas where residents currently have limited access to parks. A total of 64 locations have been identified for development and upgradation under the proposal. Special attention has been given to wards and villages included within municipal limits in 2018, where public recreational spaces remain scarce despite the rapid expansion of residential areas.
The locations identified for park development include Makkawala, Bhagirathipuram, Harbhajwala and Shivrajnagar.
The municipal commissioner further said that the demand for neighbourhood-level public spaces has increased as the city continues to expand towards its outer areas. If approved, the project is expected to add new community parks in multiple localities and improve access to open spaces for residents across the municipal area, Bansal added.
