PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

In the alleged suicide case of a post graduate medical student Dr Tanvi, police questioned the head of department of Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences (SGRRIMHS) Dr Priyanka Gupta on Thursday. According to police, the action was taken after the deceased student’s father filed a complaint alleging that the HoD had mentally harassed his daughter, which led her to take the extreme step.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Officials said the matter is under investigation and statements are being recorded. The incident came to light late on Tuesday night after Tanvi was found dead inside her car near Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital. The deceased was a student of MS Ophthalmology at SGRRIMHS. According to her father, everything was normal until December 2025. After Gupta took over as the new head of department, the situation allegedly changed.

The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobal said that the police called the accused for questioning on Thursday. He added that police teams are also examining documents and identifying all those involved in the case for further questioning. The victim’s family claims that Gupta started threatening and mentally harassing Tanvi. She was allegedly told not to speak to the previous head, Dr Tarannum Shakeel, who had guided her studies earlier. The father also alleged that despite good performance, his daughter was threatened with failure in final exams.

The student had reportedly shared her problems with her family several times and was under stress.

On the night of March 24, Tanvi spoke to her father and told him about the harassment. Later, she informed her mother that she would return home by 12:30 AM. However, when she did not return, the family got worried.

Meanwhile, the institute management has stated that the deceased was experiencing mental health issues and had attempted suicide in the past too.

DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) has taken serious note of the death of a medical student at SGRR Medical College in Dehradun. The commission’s chairwoman Kusum Kandwal has asked the police to conduct a fair and detailed investigation into the case.

Ophthalmology post graduate student at the SGRRIMHS Dr Tanvi was found unconscious in her car under suspicious condition. She was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The case became more serious after her father accused her head of department of mentally harassing his daughter.

Responding to this the USCW chief asked the police to investigate the matter carefully and take strict legal action against those found guilty. Kandwal said that harassment of female students in educational institutions is not acceptable.

The commission has also asked the police to submit a report and ensure that no evidence is tampered with.
