Dehradun to revive cultural roots with heritage walks and exhibitions

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has initiated varied efforts to preserve and promote the city’s cultural heritage and historical legacy. The initiative has been launched in response to long-standing demands from residents to protect and develop heritage and historical sites in the provisional State capital.

As part of the programme, beautification works, including the redevelopment of Gandhi Park, have already been undertaken. The administration is now planning to organise heritage walks at Gandhi Park in collaboration with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).

The Dehradun municipal commissioner Namami Bansal said that Dehradun’s culture is its heritage and historical sites, and it is essential to develop these sites and raise public awareness about them. She said that such demands have repeatedly been raised by residents. “In this direction, works like the beautification of Gandhi Park have been carried out, and heritage walks are being planned there in collaboration with INTACH,” she added.

The heritage walks will focus on showcasing Dehradun’s historical landmarks, cultural traditions and food heritage, with special emphasis on connecting the younger generation to the city’s roots. Officials said the objective is to ensure that knowledge of the city’s heritage is preserved and passed on from one generation to the next. A dedicated research team has conducted extensive documentation of Dehradun’s cultural and historical assets. Based on this research, proposals were discussed with experts and their inputs were incorporated into the planning process.
