Lunar eclipse casts shadow on Holi dates

MANSI BHAMBRI/Dehradun
The ongoing confusion regarding the date of Holi this year has caused concern among many residents in Dehradun. Religious scholars and local residents are divided on the appropriate day to celebrate Holi. Some are of the opinion that the Holi ( Dhulandi) is on March 3 while others insist it is on March 4.
This uncertainty has raised worries among local residents, as it seems that every festival celebration has become contentious regarding when to celebrate.
Local resident Manju Pandey stated that in recent years, confusion surrounding celebration dates has increased. She noted that some individuals are advocating for a Holi celebration on March 4, with the Holika Dahan ceremony on March 2, while some priests in her area are promoting the celebration of Holi on March 3, along with Holika Dahan on March 2. She is troubled by the conflicting messages.
To clarify the situation, a priest from Haridwar and secretary of the Ganga Sabha, Ujjwal said that this year, the Holika Dahan ritual, which is traditionally held on Purnima, will take place on March 2 since the Purnima will begin that evening. Typically, Holi is celebrated the day after Holika Dahan. However, this year the schedule has changed due to a lunar eclipse occurring on March 3. Celebrations are generally discouraged during lunar eclipses, so it has been suggested that the Holi festivities involving colours will take place on March 4 instead.
Another local priest, Krishnand Jaguri, added that the influence of social media has amplified the confusion surrounding festival celebrations. According to the Panchang, Holika Dahan will be observed on March 2, and he believes that Holi will be celebrated on March 3, a day after the Holika Dahan. The festival of Holi can be celebrated on March 3, as the lunar eclipse will not be visible in India and not have a real effect on Holi celebrations.
Many other religious groups remain divided on the appropriate day to celebrate Holi this year.
