A man riding a motorcycle in Gangnahar area of Haridwar allegedly opened fire at police when they stopped him for checking late on Sunday. He got injured in an encounter with the police. It turned out that the man, identified as Owais, son of Furkan, resident of old Tehsil under Gangnahar Kotwali, is an accused in a kidnapping and rape case of a minor, the Haridwar senior superintendnet of police Pramendra Singh Dobal said.
He informed that the incident took place around 10:30 PM near Saliyar bypass when Gangnahar police were conducting checks on the road leading to Paniyala. “On being stopped, Owais fired at the police.
The police chased him and alerted other stations through wireless. Soon after, forces from multiple stations reached the spot and surrounded him. In retaliatory fire, Owais was shot in the leg. Police arrested him and recovered a motorcycle and a country-made pistol from his possession. He was sent to the Civil Hospital in Roorkee for treatment. His health is stable as per the doctors,” he said. The SSP said that Owais is a history-sheeter. “He had abducted a minor about eight days ago and allegedly committed a sexual assault at a park after threatening the victim with a pistol. The victim’s father had filed a case and Owais was absconding. Our teams were looking for him,” he said.
The SSP and other officials also visited the spot to review the incident. Dobal further informed that more than half a dozen cases are registered against the accused. The investigation is ongoing and further proceedings will be done accordingly, he added.
