Max temperature nears 40°C in plains, rain provides relief in mountains

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

With more than a week left for April to end, the maximum temperatures in the plains have been hovering above 35 degrees Celsius for some days now with Pantnagar recording a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius on Monday, raising concerns about the heat which may be experienced during the peak of summer in May and June. Though the maximum temperatures were above normal in the mountainous regions too, rain brought much needed relief in various mountainous districts during the past few days. The State Meteorological Centre stated on Monday that during the past 24 hours, the maximum temperatures remained appreciably above normal in the plains and above normal to markedly above normal in the mountainous regions of the State. No significant change is likely to occur in the maximum temperature during the next four to five days in the State.

Meanwhile, very light to light rain/thunderstorms/snowfall (at altitudes of 4000 metres and above) is likely to occur at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts while dry weather is likely to prevail in the remaining districts of the State. The provisional State capital Dehradun is forecast to witness a mainly clear sky on Tuesday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be above normal at 37 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius respectively today.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in various parts of the State on Monday were 37 degrees Celsius and 20.2 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 39 degrees Celsius and 15.5 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 28.1 degrees Celsius and 12.4 degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 26.6 degrees Celsius and 13.6 degrees Celsius in New Tehri.
