Among the major decisions taken in the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) board meeting on Tuesday, it was decided that the corporation will impose a penalty on those who do not segregate their garbage before giving it to door-to-door collection vehicles. The corporation also decided it will not allow any Haat market to be set up on government or private land in the city.
The municipal commissioner Namami Bansal said that the MCD will start a pilot project in selected wards under which households or establishments that hand over segregated waste will get 50 per cent rebate in user charges, while those giving mixed waste will face penalty. She said that as per the plan, the corporation is considering collecting wet waste six days a week and dry waste once a week.
Bansal said that 550 metric tonnes of garbage is generated in Dehradun every day and disposal becomes difficult when the waste is mixed. She added that procurement of 40 additional garbage-collection vehicles has been approved and the corporation will soon have a total of 324 such vehicles.
The corporation will also outsource security personnel, she said. Besides this, The mayor Saurabh Thapliyal informed that MCD also fixed a weekly cleaning fee of Rs 25,000 of Sunday Market at Rangers Ground for two months. After this period, the market will not get permission at the site, as the department concerned has assured to provide an alternative location.
The mayor said that MCD will propose setting up a vending zone and parking space at the ground after Sunday market shifts from there.
