Residents allege govt apathy 3 years after land subsidence

Three years after the land subsidence first hit some parts of Chamoli district, particularly Jyotirmath town, some residents of the town under the banner of Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti staged a sit-in in the tehsil premises on Saturday, alleging apathy on the part of the administration in addressing the problems people have been facing there. The members of the group warned of a full-blown agitation in coming days if no positive action is taken soon on their eight-point demands.
The convener of the residents’ association, Atul Sati said that even three years after the land subsidence disaster had struck the town, the state government seemed to be sitting tight on their demands. He recalled that during the talks held earlier with the chief minister, he had agreed to consider all the demands raised by their organisation. “The Central Government even sanctioned Rs 1640 crore. Yet, all the demands the CM agreed to meet have remained unmet. This is an instance of backing down on assonances. Hence, we are on a one-day sit-in,” he said and added warningly that if things remain unaddressed in a fortnight they would launch a bigger movement.
