The Congress has stated that the stampede in Haridwar is not just a tragedy but also a glaring evidence of the failure of the government and local administration. The Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee expressed its condolences and wished a speedy recovery to the injured while assuring its support to the families of the affected. The party has demanded various measures including a judicial probe monitored by a sitting High Court judge.
The PCC president Karan Mahara blamed the failure of the local administration and negligence of the government for the incident. In addition to the judicial probe, the Congress has demanded that strict action should be taken against the officials responsible and those found guilty in the incident. The next of kin of those who died must be provided Rs one crore while all the expense on the treatment of the injured should be borne by the government.
Further, a concrete crowd control policy should be drafted for Haridwar and other religious places in the State, the party demanded. Mahara said, “The BJP government is focused mainly on publicity while no concrete steps are taken for the safety of devotees. Innocent devotees lost their lives due to the failure of the administration. This tragic incident is not just a result of administrative failure but also shows the attitude of the authorities towards human life,” the PCC chief said.
