ED attaches assets of edu society in scholarship scam

In latest news from Doon, in connection with the sensational student scholarship scam that came into the limelight in 2019, prompting formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached assets worth Rs one crore of the Roorkee-based educational company Vardhman Educational Society (VES). ED sources said that 50 other such educational companies are now under its scanner in connection with the scholarship scam. These sources further said that the Roorkee-based society is suspected to have siphoned off crores of rupees from the State welfare department by presenting fictitious names of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students entitled to the stipend.
Notably, this group is operating two institutes-Institute of Management Studies and IMS Institute of Technology- both based in Roorkee. After ED had started probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the Central agency sent notices to a large number of education-related companies spread over Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.
